Roy HarveyAnother entertaining challenge from the inimitable Roy Harvey.

Roy Harvey's Christmas Quiz on The Laws of Rugby Union - 2009

1.     A player on the Elf team passes the ball back over the Goal-line between the goalposts into In-goal to a teammate. The teammate runs with ball towards the Touch-in-goal Line and touches the ball down 6m from the Touch-in goal Line.

Where does the referee award the ensuing 5m scrum?

2.     Directly after the Gnomes win the ball at a lineout the ball-carrying centre is tackled (after running about eight metres)  by a willfully loitering offside Elf.

Should the referee award a PK?   If so, where?

3.     During a game involving seventeen-year-old players the Gnome team fullback  is sent off for foul play.

Does this situation affect ensuing scrum formation? If so, how?

4.     At a scrum, must the scrumhalf throwing in stand 1m from the scrum or may the scrumhalf stand closer as long as the ball is thrown (released) before it enters the tunnel?

5.     After the ball goes into touch 8m from the Elf Goal-line the Elf fullback takes a quick-throw-in to a teammate standing In-goal. The teammate (looking elfwhere) is unaware of the quick throw and the thrown ball travels beyond the Dead-ball-line.

How and where is the game restarted?

6.     A Gnome team fullback makes a 'Mark' In-goal, 2m from the Touch-in-goal Line.

(a) Where is the kick awarded?

(b) Where would the optional scrum be located?

7.     An Elf player catches the ball from a Gnome kick and is immediately bound on by two Elf teammates.

Is a maul formed when a Gnome player binds on to any of these three players?  If not, why not?

8.     When a ruck has formed, a Gnome player standing behind the hindmost foot, but about 3m metres to the side of the ruck, advances directly forward ahead of the hindmost foot and then moves towards the ruck, joining alongside the hindmost player.

Is this legal? If not, why not?

9.     At a formed lineout the Elf receiver (scrum half) stands 2m from the line-of-touch  As soon as the ball is released by the thrower the Elf receiver runs forward into a (tactically created) gap in the lineout, catches the ball, and runs forward to score a try.

What (if anything) is illegal with this scenario?

10.  Just before the ball is thrown in at a line-out awarded to the Gnomes, the front Gnome in the actual formed line runs to the touch-line and takes the ball off the thrower, the receiver runs into the line-out, and the (ex) thrower runs into the receiver position. The ball is then thrown in.

What, if anything, is illegal about this scenario?

Season's Greetings to You All!
