Roy HarveyA challenging and amusing quiz from Roy Harvey
A Lighthearted-But Cunning-2008 Christmas Challenge.
Use the Law Book as a reference when appropriate (Answers given only if requested): -
1. An Elf player complains of an injury and the captain wants that player to leave the game and another player brought on. An attending veterinary doctor –a member of The National Elf Service (couldn’t resist) - claims that the player is faking, and the referee agrees. Can the player leave the match? If so, under what circumstances?
2. (a) Why is it tactically advantageous to ‘sub’ a player for a minor injury (say, slightly sprained ankle) than to replace that player due to injury?
(b) Why is this particularly relevant to Under 19 games?
3. Because the appointed referee fails to show up and the captains cannot agree on a replacement, the home team captain appoints a referee. This appointed referee is very unfit – as is the home team in general – and announces that the game will be played with 10 minutes halves. (a) Is this legally permissible? (b) If the replacement referee is accidentally run over and knocked unconscious how is the next referee appointed?
4. What are the two occasions when the referee whistles but play does not stop?
5. A referee awards a P.K. for offside. Under what two circumstances may the decision be changed?
6. Law 7 overviews what any player may do during the game. But there is one aspect of the game in which some players are restricted from taking part. What is it? (Duhh!).
7. An Elf player is obstructed on the half-way-line (I’m tempted to write ‘elf-way-line’) after kicking the ball ahead. The ball lands on the opponents’ 22m line, seven metres from the touchline. It then bounces forward until a Gnome player catches it, about three metres from the goal line (gnome line). The Elf captain asks for the penalty kick five metres from the goal line.
According to Law Book ambiguity (read carefully) could this request be granted?
8. The ball is passed along the Gnomes’ backs from a lineout. A willfully loitering Elf player tackles the Gnome outside centre when catching the ball at the half-way-line. Decision?
9. A Gnome player is standing behind the backmost foot of a ruck, but 15m to its side. This gnome advances directly forward, ahead of the back foot of the ruck, and immediately runs 15m. across to join the ruck alongside the hindmost gnome in the ruck.
According to the Law Book ambiguity, is this legal?
10. Gnomes’ #5 is ‘sin binned’ at an Under 19 game. At the next scrum (Gnome 5m. line) the Elves put eight players into the scrum. Just as the referee notices the fact, Elves win the ball and the No.8 scores a try before the referee has the chance to whistle for the uneven numbers. Very nearby, the Gnome coach has been screaming and jumping up and down, shoe-bells ringing, ever since the scrum engagement. What should be awarded?
11. List six ways points may be scored without a player crossing the Goal Line.
12. What may be the smallest possible dimensions of a rugby field, including In-goal?
Draw its diagram.
