Day 4:
Canada U20 6 USA U20 3
In thrilling and intense final match of the NACRA Women's 15s Championship, Canada edged their North American rivals 6-3 to take the trophy. Both sides played with passion and pride, choosing to run the ball at every opportune time, rather than kick for territory. At half time the game was stalemate at 0-0 and it was not until the 6th minute of the second half when USA took the lead via a Chelsea Garber penalty. Laura Murphy-Burke equalised with a penalty for Canada after 12 minutes and it was not until the closing miuntes of the match when Misha Maric kicked a penalty for Canada to ensure the victory.
Caribbean Select 65 Bahamas 0
Local hosts Bahamas, in their first match of the tournament, found the going tough under blistering heat in Nassau. Two tries each from Fraser and Nero secured the win for the Selects, who played with great confidence, after impressive performances against Canada and USA U20s. Holmes, Parchment, Phillips, Sanchez, Groves, Faron and Hope all touched down with Hope adding 5 conversions, to round off a successful week for the Caribbean Women. Bahamas must now re-group for Saturdays showdown with Cayman for the Caribbean Championship.
USA U20 30 Caribbean Select 7
Canada U20 62 Cayman Islands 0
Caribbean Selects put on an outstanding performance against the USA U20s, at one time taking an early 7-5 lead and holding them to 10-7 at half time. Many anticipated the vastly superior North Americans to pile on the points, however taking heart and learning from their performance against Canada, the selects played with more confidence and a well organised defence that tackled hard throughout the game. The determined Select defence prevented the USA from finding any fluidity, forcing them into early errors. Scrum half Gessner opened the scoring for the USA only for Lisa Fraser to level the scores for the selects. Collette Hopes successful conversion gave the Selects a surprise 7-5 lead which lasted well into the first half, until Siebach scored after 35 minutes. Half time: USA U20 10 Caribbean Selects 7. In the second half, as the selects tired, the USA found more space and creativity and seconds tries for Siebach and Gessner and one each from Humphrys and Washington, provided the USA with a comfortable 30-7 final result. The Selects however, were the team of the day, which the local Bahamas crowd warmed to.
In the 5.00 p.m. match Canada ran out easy 62-0 winners over a Cayman team, which struggled through injuries. Canada scored 31 points in the first half through ties from Croteau, Mackinnon, Murphy-Burke, Beazley and Maric, with Murphy-Burke adding 3 conversions. The second half was pretty much one way traffic as the heat and injuries took toll on the Cayman team. Willoughby opned the second half scoring with an early try which Murphy-Burke converted. Further tris from Murphy-Burke, McNally, Beazley and Anderson, with Murphy-Burke kicking a further 2 conversions took the final score to 62-0. All eyes now are on the Friday evening match between USA U20 and Canada U20.
Canada U20 43 Caribbean Select 0
USA U20 85 Cayman Islands 0
A select Caribbean team put up a determined display against Canada U20s, though superior fitness, skills and organisation ensured that a victory for the North Americans was never in any doubt.
In the second match of the day, the USA U20s overpowered the Cayman Islands in a relatively one sided match.
In a match that lasted 2 1/2 hours thanks to a tropical thunderstorm and lightening that halted the game for a considerable period of time, Canada opened the scoring with a try from McNally, followed by further tries in the first half from Willoughby, Jacobs and Moleschi and a conversion from Hunter to take a 22-0 half time lead. Although not scoring in the game, strong tackling from the Caribbean Women and some opportune running when they secured the ball, allowed the Selects to keep in the match throughout and occassionally pose a serious threat to the Canada try line. A second try for Willoughby and one each for Murphy-Burke and Smith, with Murphy-Burke landing 3 conversions, ensured Canada a comfortable 43-0 win.
In a free scoring game, USA U20 romped away to an easy win courtesy of a 13 try spree, with Garber bagging a hatrick. McKnight and Johnson both scored a couple each with further tries being added by Baravilala, Bowlus, Anderson, Barley, Sherman and Hathaway. A fine kicking display from Garber (6 conversions) and Baravilala (4 conversions), rounded off the natch for the USA, who ran excellent lines throughout and attacked with pace at all times. Judging from the first two matches of the opening day's play, Canada U20 may need to raise their game if they are to defeat an impressive looking USA U20 in the final match on Friday evening.
